Large Herbivore Foundation

Large Herbivore Foundation
 The Large Herbivore Foundation (LHF) is an independentinternational nature conservation NGO. The LHF is committed to theconservation and restoration of Large Herbivore species, theircommunities and their habitats/ ecosystems in Eurasia. The LargeHerbivores are the group of large plant eating (hoofed) mammals,ranging from small species like Musk deer and Roe deer, throughGazelles, Red deer, mountain sheep and goats, to large species likeCamel and European Bison. Focus of the LHF programme are the over 130large herbivore species; the specific key role large herbivores play inthe temperate Eurasian ecosystems and the significance they have forpeople in many ways.

Objectives
  • To conserve and restore ecosystems and landscapes as habitats and ecological substrates for large herbivores
  • To conserve and restore all wild large herbivore species in viable and natural spread populations
  • To also use domestic substitutes of extinct large herbivore species, to restore the ecological functions of large herbivores in landscapes. De-domestication and re- wilding of these grazers will be part of this process
  • To increase knowledge and appreciation of large herbivores by people.
